1 in 23 adults in New Zealand are living with heart disease
1 in 23 adults in New Zealand are living with heart disease. That's more than 175,000 people who are mums, dads, grandparents, brothers and sisters. Our hearts are the source of everything we do, so we need to start prioritising a healthy heart today!
We encourage people to have the right insurance protection in place to get through life’s unexpected challenges.
Heart attacks, heart failure and heart disease continue to rise, especially among the younger population. Heart disease claims the life of one New Zealander every 90 minutes, regardless of age, gender or background. Heart issues can happen to anyone.
Some examples are:
John Mayhew, a doctor, had been involved in many cardiac arrests in his medical career. But one day he was a patient. He was completing a workout at his local gym when a cardiac arrest happened to him. He was lucky to have been resuscitated.
Natalie, a young wife, mother and nurse, her cardiac event happened on what seemed like an ordinary evening, as she was folding laundry at home. But her nursing background immediately sounded internal alarms and she knew she was experiencing something out of the ordinary.
Faye, a 48-year-old schoolteacher at a primary school in Whanganui, suffered an unexpected cardiac arrest at a sports event, which brought her life to a screeching halt.
Heart diseases are responsible for almost 10,000 deaths every year in New Zealand, almost a quarter of those deaths can be avoidable through better prevention and improved and timely access to evidence-based health care.
